Japan Display has said it plans to begin manufacturing new display components that it says can significantly reduce power consumption and extend battery life for smartwatches and other electronics. The manufacturer of small displays used in smartphones, cars and other products is in discussions with several customers and plans to begin mass production from 2024.
Japan Display says its new backplane uses 40 percent less power than conventional components and also improves screen resolution, making it suitable for VR devices. The company expects the new display component to generate 50 billion yen in annual sales within five years.
