What Are QR Codes?
A QR code is a type of barcode that can be easily read by a digital device and stores information as a series of pixels in a square grid.
QR codes are often used to track information about products in a supply chain and are often used in marketing and advertising campaigns, as many smartphones have built-in QR readers. More recently, they have played an important role in monitoring coronavirus exposure and slowing the spread of the virus.
The first QR code system was invented in 1994 by Japanese company Denso Wave, a Toyota subsidiary. They needed a more accurate way to track tools and parts throughout the production process. To achieve this, they developed a type of barcode that can encode kanji, kana, and alphanumeric characters.

How QR Codes Work
Patterns in QR codes represent binary codes that can be explained to reveal the code’s information.
A QR reader can identify to a standard QR code based on the three large squares outside the QR code. After identifying these three formats, he learns that everything inside the square is a QR code.
The QR reader then examines the QR code, dividing everything into a grid. He looks at the individual grid squares and assigns a value to each depending on whether it’s black or white.
A standard QR code can be defined based on six components:
- Whiteness – This is the blank white border outside of a QR code. Without this boundary, a QR reader cannot identify what is or is not in the QR code due to interference from outside elements.
- Finder Pattern – QR codes usually cover three black squares in the lower left, upper left and upper right corners. These squares tell a QR reader that it’s looking at a QR code and where the code’s outer boundaries are.

What are the QR Code Types?
QR codes can be used for multiple purposes, but there are four widely accepted versions of QR codes. The version used determines how data can be stored and is called the “input mode”. It can be numeric, alphanumeric, binary or kanji. The type of the mod is communicated via the version information field in the QR code.
- Numeric mode: This is for decimal places 0 to 9. The numeric mode is the most effective storage mode, which can be used for up to 7,089 people.
- Alphanumeric mode: This is for decimal digits from 0 to 9, plus capital letters from A to Z, and a space besides the symbols $, %, *, +, –, ., / and :. It allows to store up to 4,296 persons.

However, it has since become the least effective as only 1,817 personalities are available for storage.
