So far without nextgen: 10 best games of 2021 according to Afisha Daily

2021 was not the best year for gamers. Prices for graphics cards have skyrocketed, the PlayStation 5 cannot be bought, but even if you have assembled a powerful gaming system, it is not so easy to find a truly revolutionary project on it. As a result, the best games of 2021 were not the most breakthrough, but in their own way charming works – and we collected the Top 10.

10. Guardians of the Galaxy

Spider-Man (2018) and – with reservations – last year’s Marvel’s Avengers have already proven that Marvel superhero games can be cool, so the high quality of Guardians of the Galaxy is no surprise. But certainly no one expected that it would turn out almost a new Mass Effect – with an epic scale, humor, about saving the Galaxy and group psychotherapy within your squad.

9. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

We’ve been waiting all year nextgenthat would have justified buying a new console or upgrading a PC – but it never came. A rare game that demonstrates why a PS5 is needed at all (when there is already a PS4) is Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. An expensive, funny, rumbling blockbuster with cool graphics is valuable not only in itself, but also as an opportunity to glimpse with one eye into the future of games, which will never come.

8. Resident Evil Village

In the Western press, The Village has been called the “Resident Evil Encyclopedia” – it contains just a little bit of each classic part of the saga. This is a stylish, lively horror that can be recommended to absolutely all video game lovers – everyone will find something here to their liking. The main thing is not to get lost when you start turning letters into Roman numerals: both V and I, and both L. This is already the eighth (VIII) canonical part of the series!

7. Death’s Door

Nice action movie about the bird – messenger of death from the authors of the tiny indie game Titan Souls. A well-developed world, excellent combat mechanics and a surprisingly sane plot about immortal demigods who do not want to die and have been hiding from the Reapers for centuries – if you have long regretted that The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake cannot be played anywhere except Nintendo Switch, then here its accessible gloomy analogue to you.

6. Loop Hero

Indie hit from Russia, complex and original rogueike: you, as if embroidering with a cross, collect the world through the cells, and then a knight stuck in a time loop begins to rush around it. This is the first, but not the last, game on our list with the word loop in its title.

5. Psychonauts 2

A charming adventure about a school of telepathic children diving into the minds of other people. This year marked the twentieth anniversary of ” Harry Potter ” – Psychonauts 2 unexpectedly turned out to be its closest video game counterpart, and not in the sense that the authors stole the plot, but in spirit. If you miss fairy tales and school romance – you are here.

4. It Takes Two

“Scenes from a Married Life” from the world of video games. On the verge of divorce, husband and wife suddenly turn into dolls from their daughter Rose’s toy box. The task is to regain our human appearance, at the same time making peace. The game must be played strictly together (preferably – with the husband / wife with whom you are going to divorce, this will give the maximum immersion effect, in addition, there is a possibility that joint puzzle solving will unite you in the same way as the heroes of the game). Grand Prix of The Game Awards 2021.

3. Deathloop

A witty action movie from the authors of Dishonored and Prey. The hero, like the Hitman, must kill several high-ranking villains, and necessarily in one day, but this is groundhog day . As soon as you die (or just go to bed), you find yourself again at the beginning of the same day. A rare combination of quality gameplay, high-budget production, and an honest attempt to change the long-standing rules of the first-person action genre.

2. Metroid Dread

Progenitor kvazizhanra metroidvaniya back in tip-top shape. It features pixel-perfect gameplay, perfect difficulty curves, ferocious boss battles and an open world that beckons with its secrets. The main feature is the immortal robots EMMI, turning the game into a horror. With Metroid Dread, everything is simple: this is the main reason to buy a Nintendo Switch in 2021 (and possibly in 2022).

1. Kena: Bridge of Spirits

The magic forest is struck by some filth that devours trees and spawns monsters. A girl armed with a magic staff and a band of blue-black pot-bellied running after her must cope with this muck.little men…

The heroine performs acrobatic stunts, fights with enemies in close combat and unleashes her micro-army of black toddlers on them. They unanimously attack the enemy, envelop him with their slurry, and then the girl finishes off the villain with a staff.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is not the most outstanding, albeit very enjoyable game made with a soul. It is unlikely that she would have headed this top, if not for one circumstance. She looks like a Pixar cartoon (well, or rather as a short film from a couple of Pixar animators), but at the same time it feels that it, unlike, say, the upcoming Horizon: Forbidden West or the already mentioned Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, was made with a much more modest budget and the efforts of a small team. This is the debut project of a small studio (there are only 14 people in Ember Lab), which was previously engaged in advertising and 3D videos. How did you manage to create a game of this quality?

The secret is in the Unreal Engine. The powerful engine allows you to easily transfer detailed models from programs for creating 3D graphics into the game. If earlier programmers racked their brains over how to optimize the quality of the picture without greatly disfiguring the appearance, now you can just take the finished model, insert it into the game -the engine will figure it out…

Nextgen is already with us, only he came a little from the side from which it is customary to wait for him. There was no revolution in the graphics of games. But these graphics have become a little easier to create.

Modern engines allow small teams to make games of stunning beauty. Ember Lab did – and you can too.
