The head of Square Enix talks about the benefits of NFT and blockchain technologies in video games

Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda shared the company’s plans for development in 2022. In his New Year’s address to studio staff, he noted the growing popularity of games containing blockchain technologies and non-fungible tokens.

According to Matsuda, most modern gamers adhere to the concept of “play for fun”, where players use ready-made content provided by developers. Only a small part of users are ready to create something on their own, while they do it voluntarily and solely for the sake of showing their own creativity.

The introduction of blockchain technologies will allow the creation of titles that will independently develop in the course of their existence thanks to the efforts of developers and the community. The use of NFT and blockchain will make the “play to earn” concept more popular. As noted by Matsuda, this will allow content makers to receive awards for their contribution to the development of titles.

In 2022, Square Enix plans to pay more attention to the implementation of NFT technologies, the creation of blockchain-based games, as well as the introduction of its own cryptocurrency. However, the developers will adjust the strategy, listening to the opinion of the community.
